Born and raised in Indonesia, I lived in Germany for four years before moving to the United States in 1991. I expect to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in August this year. I speak English, German, Indonesian, and Javanese. My goal is to become a practical, highly trained, and well-qualified nurse.

I hold a B.S. degree in Business Administration from California State Polytechnic University and have worked as a retail manager. I was looking forward to a long and prosperous future in business. However, my father became extremely ill and required constant care. I could not work long hours and provide the care that he needed. Consequently, I left my secure management position in 2008 to care for him. I had never considered nursing as a career until this time.

I needed basic nursing skills to care for my father, and I soon wanted to learn more than basic skills. I also discovered that I enjoyed this taste of nursing more than the world of commerce, so I decided to attend nursing school. It was the best decision, and I have thoroughly enjoyed all my nursing training and experience. I derive great satisfaction from being able to make a difference. I am extremely fortunate to have accidentally ‘stumbled upon’ what I consider a true vocation rather than a career choice.

My interest in XXXX Healthcare System was fired when I undertook a clinical rotation in Maternity and Mental Health at XXXX in Orange, California. I consider myself fortunate to have been exposed to the incredibly positive nursing culture apparent at XXXX. The recognition of patient dignity and treatment excellence was clearly in place and pursued by all the staff with whom I came into contact. I know that XXXX is at the ‘cutting edge’ of new medical technology. Naturally, I wish to have the opportunity to acquire knowledge that is current. I have also been impressed to read the awards given to recognize excellence in nursing at XXXX. I seek to work and train in the best healthcare environment possible and regard XXXX as the hospital that will provide that for me.

My work ethic is demonstrated by the fact that I not only obtained my B.S. in Business Administration while working full-time but excelled in the program. Because of my high motivation and commitment, I am confident that I could rank among the best performers in your residency program. I undertake to apply myself fully and very enthusiastically if my application succeeds.

I have happily studied, worked, and socialized with people of various cultural and social backgrounds. I consider myself culturally sensitive and aware of how important this is in the nursing profession. I have received many ‘customer service awards’ in my pre-nursing career, demonstrating my ability to interact positively with others. I know that nursing is ‘all about people' and that the most highly qualified nurse is unlikely to be fully effective without a genuine interest in the patients they treat. I like people, and they respond well to me because they sense the authenticity of my concern. I have a sense of humor and know the value of a smile.

My business studies and experience are relevant to nursing more than I had anticipated: my problem-solving skills, leadership, teamwork, creativity, a willingness to adapt quickly and embrace change, a focus on goals and optimum outcomes, and observational skills. I believe that my management background will enable me to bring some valuable and unique insights to my class.

The Clinical Rotation Courses taken during my BSN studies have been of enormous value, and I gained significant knowledge and experience through enthusiastic participation in them. I particularly enjoyed the work related to Community Health and disease prevention. I appreciate the wide variety of exposures and risks experienced in specific communities. This course gave me an insight into the significance of the environment on health issues.

I have obtained additional qualifications in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and the American Heart Association Basic Life Support. I have undertaken several nursing-related volunteer activities such as participating in disaster simulations, the care of veterans, community health programs, and assisting the mentally and physically disabled with essential skill learning and recreational activities.

My eventual goal is to pursue the MSN degree to advance as far as possible in the profession and excel in nursing. I know that inclusion in the residency program at XXXX will help me to realize my goals in nursing, especially in helping the underserved.

Thank you for considering my application.
