I was born and raised in Indonesia, then lived in Germany for four years before moving to the United States in 1991. I expect to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in August 2015. I speak English, German, Indonesian, and Javanese. I aim to become an efficient, highly trained, and qualified nurse.
I hold a second B.S. degree in Business Administration from California State Polytechnic University. Having graduated, I took a manager position with Vons Safeway and looked forward to a long and prosperous future in business. However, my father became very ill and required constant care. I could not work long hours and provide the care that he needed. Consequently, I left my secure management position in 2008 to care for him. I had never considered nursing as a career until this time.
I needed some basic nursing skills to care for my father, and I soon wanted to learn more than basic skills. I also discovered that I enjoyed this taste of nursing more than the world of commerce, so I decided to attend nursing school. It was the best decision, and I have enjoyed it so far. I derive great satisfaction from being able to help. I am exceptionally fortunate to have chosen the right career, which I consider a true vocation rather than a career choice.
My interest in XXXX Healthcare System was fired when I undertook a Maternity and Mental Health clinical rotation at XXXX in Orange, California. I consider myself fortunate to have been exposed to the incredibly positive nursing culture apparent at St. Joseph. The recognition of patient dignity and treatment excellence was clearly in place and pursued by all the staff I contacted. I know that XXXX uses new medical technology at the ‘cutting edge.’ I wish to acquire knowledge that is as up to date as possible. I was also impressed to read about the awards for excellence in nursing at XXXX. I seek to work and train in the best healthcare environment possible and regard XXXX as the hospital that will provide that for me.
I know that many well-qualified applicants will be applying for residency positions. But I fully share the values, passion, and commitment that XXXX has demonstrated and seek to uphold and advance those values in my work.
My work ethic is demonstrated by the fact that I not only obtained my B.S. in Business Administration while working full-time but excelled in the program. I can promise even more significant commitment in my nursing work and studies as these are dearer to me than studying business subjects. Therefore, I believe you may have complete confidence that I shall be among the best performers of those participating in the residency program. I undertake to apply myself fully and very enthusiastically if my application succeeds.
I have happily studied, worked, and socialized with people of various cultural and social backgrounds. I consider myself culturally sensitive and aware of how important this is in nursing. I have received many ‘customer service awards’ in my pre-nursing career, demonstrating my ability to interact positively with others. I know that nursing is all about people and that the most highly qualified nurse is unlikely to be fully effective without a genuine interest in the patients they treat. I like people; they respond well to me because they sense real and personal engagement. I have a sense of humor and know the value of a smile.
My business studies and experience are relevant to nursing, indeed more than I had anticipated, and have been especially useful in my nursing to date. Management requires problem-solving skills, leadership, teamwork, creativity, a willingness to adapt quickly, embrace change, and always focus on goals and optimum outcomes. My management background will enable me to bring valuable and unique insights to my class.
The Clinical Rotation Courses taken during my BSN studies have been of enormous value, and I gained significant knowledge and experience through enthusiastic participation. I particularly enjoyed the work related to Community Health and disease prevention within communities. I appreciate the wide variety of exposures and risks experienced in diverse communities. This course gave me an insight into the significance of the environment for health, which I know will be of immense value as I continue to advance. I look forward to a lifetime of education in nursing.
I have sought and obtained additional qualifications and hold those in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and the American Heart Association Basic Life Support. I have undertaken several nursing-related volunteer activities, including participation in disaster simulations, the care of veterans, community health programs, and assisting the mentally and physically disabled with essential skill learning and recreational activities.
I hope to earn the MSN Degree, advance as far as possible in the profession, advance in work, and be as helpful and practical a nursing professional as possible. I know that inclusion in the residency program at XXXX will significantly aid me in achieving my goals.
Thank you for considering my application.
